How to choose the right artist for your custom tattoo design in Chicago

Getting a tattoo is easy. Getting the right tattoo artist for your specific idea is where things get complicated — especially in a city like Chicago where there are hundreds of tattoo shops and thousands of artists to choose from.

If you are looking for a custom tattoo, this is not something you should rush into or base solely on price. The artist you choose will determine not only how your tattoo looks, but how the entire experience feels from start to finish.

After years in the tattoo industry and working with clients from all over Chicago and beyond, we have seen firsthand what leads to amazing tattoos — and what leads to regret, coverups, and bad experiences.

Here is what you should actually look for when choosing the right custom tattoo artist in Chicago.

    1. Choose an Artist Based on Their Style — Not Convenience

One of the biggest mistakes people make is walking into a random shop and letting whichever artist is available do the tattoo.

Not every tattoo artist specializes in the same type of work. Someone who excels at traditional tattoos may not be the best fit for fine line, realism, Japanese, anime, or black and grey work.

The first thing you should ask yourself is:

“Does this artist already create tattoos that look like what I want?”

If the answer is no, keep looking.

A great custom tattoo starts with choosing an artist whose natural style already matches your vision. You should never expect an artist to suddenly tattoo in a completely different style than what they consistently show in their portfolio.

    2. Research the Artist Beyond Instagram

A polished Instagram page is not enough anymore.

When researching tattoo artists in Chicago, look at their work in multiple places:

    • Their shop website
    • Their Instagram portfolio
    • Healed tattoo photos
    • Client reviews
    • Tagged photos from real clients

You also want to pay attention to consistency. Does the quality look solid across years of work, or only in a few recent posts?

    Experience matters.

An artist with years of consistent, high-level work is usually a safer investment than someone newer who only posts heavily edited highlight photos online.

It is also smart to make sure the artist is actually affiliated with the shop they claim to work at. Unfortunately, tattoo scams and fake profiles have become increasingly common.

    3. Pay Attention to the Shop’s Reputation

One thing many people overlook is that all tattoo shops are not created equal.

The reputation of the shop says a lot about the type of artists they hire and the experience they provide.

    Before booking, research:

    • Google reviews
    • Client testimonials
    • Cleanliness
    • Professionalism
    • Shop atmosphere
    • How clients describe their experience

A good tattoo shop should feel welcoming, organized, and professional from the moment you walk in.

If the shop feels dirty, chaotic, or unfriendly, that is a major red flag.

    4. The Consultation Matters More Than People Think

A consultation is not just about discussing the tattoo design. It is your opportunity to see if the artist is actually the right fit for you.

A few major green flags during a consultation include:

    • The artist listens carefully
    • They ask thoughtful questions
    • They explain the process clearly
    • They make you feel comfortable
    • Their communication feels professional and respectful
    • Their personality and “vibe” match what you are looking for

If you are getting a large custom tattoo, you may spend multiple sessions and many hours with this person.

You should genuinely feel comfortable around them.

A technically skilled artist with a bad attitude can still create a terrible overall experience.

    5. Do Not Choose a Tattoo Artist Based on Price Alone

This is one of the hardest lessons people learn in tattooing.

Cheap tattoos often become expensive coverups later.

While you should absolutely look for fair pricing, choosing the lowest price usually leads to disappointment. Artists who charge significantly less than the market average often:

    • Have less experience
    • Have smaller client demand
    • Produce inconsistent work
    • Lack long-term portfolio depth

A better approach is to research average tattoo pricing in Chicago and compare artists within that range.

If the artist you truly want is outside your budget, consider:

    • Saving up longer
    • Going smaller with the design
    • Splitting the project into sessions

    Remember: tattoos are permanent.

Waiting for the right artist is always worth it.

    6. Look for Healed Tattoos — Not Just Fresh Ones

Fresh tattoos almost always look brighter and sharper immediately after completion.

Healed tattoos tell the real story.

When researching artists, try to find healed examples of their work. This gives you a better understanding of:

    • Line quality
    • Saturation
    • Longevity
    • How their tattoos age over time

A strong artist should be proud to show healed results. But please remember that your skin is always changing. Every tattoo will fade and spread. A good tattooer knows how to ensure that even when the tattoo changes over the years, it will still look good.

    7. Your Experience Matters Just as Much as the Tattoo

One thing the tattoo industry overlooked for years was customer experience. When we started Speakeasy Custom Tattoo in 2008, the customer experience was our main focus and this remains the same today.

Today, clients want more than just good artwork. They want to feel comfortable, respected, and taken care of throughout the process.

    A great tattoo experience includes:

    • Friendly staff
    • Good communication
    • A welcoming atmosphere
    • Cleanliness
    • Professionalism
    • Comfort during long sessions
    • Feeling heard and respected

At Speakeasy Custom Tattoo, creating a positive experience has always been a major priority. From greeting clients at the door to making sure they are comfortable during long tattoo sessions, the goal is to create an environment where people actually enjoy the process — not just endure it.

That level of care is something many people do not realize they should be looking for until after they have had a bad experience elsewhere.

    8. First-Time Tattoo Clients Should Not Feel Intimidated

Getting your first tattoo can feel overwhelming.

There are endless styles, artists, opinions, and horror stories online. A good shop understands that and helps guide clients through the process instead of making them feel judged or pressured.

Even if you only have a rough idea — like wanting a tattoo of your dog or a meaningful memory — a strong custom artist can help shape that idea into something beautiful and lasting.

The best tattoo artists do not just tattoo well. They communicate well.

Final Thoughts: Choose Carefully — You Wear It Forever

If there is one thing to remember when choosing a custom tattoo artist in Chicago, it is this:

Not all artists — and not all tattoo shops — are equal.

    Take the time to:

    • Research thoroughly
    • Study portfolios carefully
    • Read reviews
    • Meet the artist in person
    • Pay attention to how the shop makes you feel
    • Choose quality over cheap pricing

The right artist will not only give you a great tattoo — they will give you an experience you feel good about for years to come.

Because in tattooing, the cheapest option often ends up costing the most in the long run.

    Artists Win Big!

There’s something special about watching people you believe in get the recognition they truly deserve—and that’s exactly what this moment feels like. Our hearts are full.

In March of 2026, at the Chicago Tattoo Arts Festival, our shop didn’t just show up to the convention—we showed out! Five of our artists walked away with awards (multiple for each artist), and honestly, it feels less like a surprise and more like the world finally catching up to what we’ve known all along.

Each of these artists brings something completely their own to the table. Different styles, different approaches, different stories—but the same level of dedication, passion, and respect for the craft. That’s what makes this so meaningful. These wins aren’t just about talent (though there’s plenty of that). They’re about the long hours, the constant push to improve, the trust built with clients, and the quiet moments behind the scenes that no one else sees.

To have five artists from our shop recognized at the same convention says everything about the people who work at Speakeasy and the environment we’ve worked so hard to build together. Our ultimate goal has always been for Speakeasy Custom Tattoo to be a place where artists support each other, challenge each other, and genuinely want to see one another succeed. There’s no ego—just hard work, creativity, and a shared love for tattooing. It means everything to see this goal come to fruition and awards or not, we are unbelievably fortunate to have so many amazing people on our team  & in our lives

To our award-winning artists: we’re proud of you. Not just for the trophies, but for the way you represent yourselves and the shop every single day. You’ve earned this.

And to everyone who has supported us—clients, friends, and the community—thank you for trusting us to do what we love. We don’t take that lightly.

  • Ordered Chaos, Pasta, and Color Splashes: The Life of Alex Prequel — Chicago’s Abstract & Watercolor Tattoo Artist

    Alex Prequel- Tattoo Artist

Ciao from Chicago — the city of wind, skyscrapers, and bold clients searching for truly unique tattoos. I’m Alex Prequel, a Chicago Tattoo Artist known for Abstract tattoos, Watercolor tattoos, Light-Realism, Asian-fusion pieces, and Brushstroke designs.
If traditional tattoos are a perfectly organized bookshelf, my style is the bookshelf after a creative tornado — chaotic , deep , colorful, romanitic ,dark passionate and still somehow very elegant.

Since moving to Chicago, I’ve learned three important things:

1 – Chicago winters require layers, strategy, and maybe a survival guide.

2 – Deep-dish pizza is less a meal and more a structural engineering challenge.

3 – Chicago has some of the most creative and fearless tattoo clients in the world.

People often tell me, “Alex, your tattoos look like a painting that escaped the canvas and moved onto my skin.” And honestly? That’s exactly my mission. My work blends movement, texture, and bold color so each piece feels alive — whether it’s a watercolor koi fish, a brushstroke dragon, or an abstract, emotion-driven custom tattoo.

If you’re searching for a custom tattoo in Chicago that’s expressive, vibrant, and guaranteed to be one-of-a-kind — something you won’t find in a flash book — you’re in the right place.

Bring your boldest ideas. I’ll bring the pasta.
Let’s create something beautifully and absolutely unforgettable together.
  • Award Winning Tattoo Artist Xenia

    Award winning Tattoo Artist

Hi, my name is Xenia. I have been tattooing since 2013. From the first day I picked up a machine, I pushed myself to study as many styles as possible. I spent years working in different directions because I did not want to limit my skill set to one category. This helped me build a strong foundation in multiple tattoo styles including fine line, black and grey realism, color realism, graphic work, and watercolor tattooing.

This range of experience allows me to design custom tattoos without stylistic restrictions. Clients come to me with all kinds of ideas, and I enjoy creating pieces that match their vision while still keeping my signature approach.

In recent years, I have gravitated toward black and grey or black and grey with selective color. I feel the strongest artistic connection to dark fantasy themes, mythology, horror elements, and character-based designs. These subjects give a lot of room for expression, detail, and atmosphere. My work in this direction has earned awards at the Chicago Tattoo Convention, including first and second place in category competitions.

Even with these personal preferences, I stay open to a wide variety of ideas. If you have a concept you want to explore, I am always interested in working together to bring it to life. My goal is to create a piece that fits your story and stands out as something unique.

    Best regards,

The Heart Behind buddy.’s Illustrative Blackwork Tattoos

For buddy. (they/them), tattooing is more than an art form—it’s a way of participating in people’s journeys, transitions, and healing processes. Their work finds purpose in being useful: offering self-harm camouflage, confidence boosters, and pieces of unserious nostalgia that remind clients to find joy and kindness in the chaos of everyday life.

    Illustrative Blackwork by buddy.

A Style Built on Contrast, Character, and Care

buddy.’s signature style blends bold outlines with delicate dotwork, creating an illustrative blackwork look that feels both graphic and soft. These contrasting elements frame their designs with clarity while allowing texture, personality, and narrative to shine through.

At the core of much of buddy.’s work is character design. They love giving life and personality to creatures, objects, and animals—often through a humorous, animistic lens. Their tattoos tell visual stories and make the mundane magical, like a frog  dressed as a wizard landing a 360 heelflip laser blaster 5000 back slide on a skateboard. Whatever floats your boat, no judgements.

Every piece is an invitation to see a little soul in things.

Botanical blackwork is another area where buddy. takes great pride. Each leaf, petal, and stem is meticulously composed around the client’s natural curves, using the body’s shape as the foundation for the design. The result is organic, flowing artwork that looks like it belongs—because it was built to.

Tattoos as Marks of Courage, Change, and Self-Discovery

Some of buddy.’s most meaningful sessions come from clients undergoing major life shifts—divorce, new beginnings, career changes, or deeply personal transformations. Helping people claim symbols of strength, courage, and identity is an honor they never take for granted. Every client who places their trust in buddy.’s hands becomes part of a shared creative process rooted in empathy, intention, and respect.
